The Danish owned Bygma A/S, which primarily focuses on professional builders, has built a new proff- and logistics centre in Svendborg.
The project includes construction of new business premises totalling 6500 m², comprising a 1500 m² new flagship store, 3 halls, and outdoor covered areas. The halls and store are built in concrete and a glulam column- and-beam system, with lightweight exterior walls cladding in wood. The entire building is designed to achieve DGNB Gold certification.
One of the challenges for the consultant was to design for a relatively high collision load in the halls and instead of specifying traditional bollards as collision protection, column shoes were used in the prefabricated column elements. By using column shoes, both the tensile capacity of the concrete elements and moment-resistant joints that can absorb the collision load are achieved, making it possible to avoid the time-consuming installation of bollards.
S. Guldfeldt Nielsen A/S, the turnkey contractor, erected the concrete columns with embedded HPM® Anchor Bolts in the foundations and HPKM® Column Shoes in the column elements themselves. As a bolted column assembly is torsional rigid, the column does not normally need to be laterally supported with pipe supports. However, in this project pipe supports were used as the tall glulam beams were cantilevered, causing eccentricity at the top of the column, and to be on the safe side, the consultant chose to support the columns with pipe supports.
